Owning a Maltipoo comes with a range of responsibilities. One that you will soon become very familiar with, is brushing.
But how familair do you need to get? In other words, how often should this be done to maintain the coat of your new dog?
Well, that’s exactly what we are going to be covering today.
I’ll also be addressing why you need to take this responsibility seriously and some personal tips and suggestions from the years of experience I have, all from owning a poodle-cross myself.
So without further ado, let’s get into it!
Need a brush? Here is the one I recommend. In fact, I personally got it manufactured for poodle-crossbreeds, like Maltipoos:
- Safe, Gentle, and Stress-Free Grooming: Non-pulling and tug-resistant so you can brush your dog with confidence and ease, your dog can enjoy being brushed and fussed, you will never have to fight come brushing time, and you never feel guilty causing pain to your dog, or damaging their coat ever again. Finally build a trusting bond.
- Effective, Thorough, and Complete Coat Care: With fine angled bristles, so you can access and groom all parts of your dog's coat effortlessly to remove dirt, debris, and tangles to ensure it looks clean, shiny, and healthy, which means you can walk your dog with pride and never be embarrassed about their coat condition again.
- Hugely Time-Saving: With hair-containing features (so loose hair isn’t left flying or left around the room), a large surface head area and one-button automatic cleaning functionality, which means less time cleaning and more time for you to do what you enjoy most.
- Practical, Durable, and Dependable: With retracting pins, a sturdy yet lightweight design, and a built with premium materials, so you can comfortably hold, use, store, and take with you on the go. You will be free to brush your dog's coat regardless of where you are, and no damage is done when not in use, which means the brush is much more durable and will last you longer.
- Purposefully Designed For Dog & Owner: Created with curly coats in mind, you can be confident regardless of coat type/condition. Ideal for doodle and poodle hybrid dogs, including: Cockapoos, Cavoodles, Maltipoos, Bernedoodles, Goldendoodles, Shih Poos, etc.
How Often Should You Brush A Maltipoo?
As a general rule, you should brush your Maltipoo at least two to three times a week. However, daily brushing is ideal to prevent mats and tangles.
Maltipoos, like other poodle-crosses, have a unique, low-shedding coat that requires regular maintenance.
The frequency of brushing depends on the length and texture of your Maltipoo’s coat, but 2-3 times per week tends to work well for most owners.
For instance, I brush my poodle-cross, Bailey, every day to keep her coat smooth and tangle-free.
That being said, I do take her for daily walks…
Bailey has a curly coat similar to a Maltipoo’s, so I’ve learned that daily grooming works best for us.
Though I have friends with poodle-crossbreeds who get away with just twice per week. Though it must be said they don’t seem to be as active as us!
Nevertheless, while this all may seem like a lot of work, trust me, it’s worth it in the long run!
As we shall see in the next section.
Why You Need to Regularly Brush Your Maltipoo
Prevents Mats and Tangles
Maltipoos have a mix of curly and wavy hair, which can easily mat and tangle if not brushed regularly.
Mats can be painful for your dog and can lead to skin infections if not addressed promptly.
Regular brushing helps keep your Maltipoo’s coat healthy, clean, and tangle-free.
Reduces Shedding
Although Maltipoos are considered low-shedding dogs, they still lose some hair.
Regular brushing helps remove loose hair and reduces the amount of hair your Maltipoo sheds around your home.
Promotes Healthy Skin
Brushing your Maltipoo not only takes care of their coat but also their skin.
The process helps distribute natural oils throughout their coat, keeping the skin moisturized and healthy.
Builds Trust and Offers Bonding
Regular grooming sessions allow you to bond with your Maltipoo and develop trust.
It’s a great opportunity to spend quality time together and strengthen your relationship.
Tips and Suggestions When Brushing Your Maltipoo
Use The Right Tools
Invest in quality grooming tools to make the brushing process more comfortable for your Maltipoo.
A slicker brush is perfect for removing tangles, while a comb with both wide and narrow teeth can help you tackle any stubborn mats.

Create a Comfortable Environment
Choose a quiet, comfortable spot for grooming sessions.
Make sure your Maltipoo feels safe and secure. I like to sit on the floor with Bailey, so she’s at ease during our brushing time.
Be Gentle and Patient
When brushing your Maltipoo, always be gentle and patient. Use slow, steady strokes to work through tangles and mats.
If you encounter a stubborn mat, don’t yank or pull on it. Instead, try using a comb or your fingers to gently work through the tangle.
Reward Good Behavior
Encourage your Maltipoo to enjoy grooming sessions by rewarding them with treats and praise during and after brushing.
This positive reinforcement will help your dog associate brushing with happy experiences.
Establish a Routine
Creating a consistent grooming routine will make it easier for both you and your Maltipoo.
Set aside specific days and times for brushing sessions, so your dog knows what to expect.
Bailey and I have a daily routine right after our evening walk, which has worked wonders for us.
Introduce Grooming Early
If you have a Maltipoo puppy, it’s essential to introduce grooming early on.
The sooner they get used to being brushed, the easier it will be for them as they grow up.
Start with short, gentle grooming sessions and gradually increase the duration as your puppy becomes more comfortable.
Regularly Check for Skin Issues
While brushing your Maltipoo, keep an eye out for any signs of skin issues, such as redness, irritation, or hot spots.
Early detection of these problems can help prevent more severe complications.
If you notice anything concerning, consult your veterinarian for advice.
Consider Professional Grooming
In addition to regular brushing at home, you might want to consider taking your Maltipoo to a professional groomer every six to eight weeks.
A professional groomer can give your Maltipoo a thorough trim, ensuring their coat remains healthy and manageable.
Finally
Brushing your Maltipoo is an essential part of their grooming routine.
As a general rule, aim for at least two to three times a week, with daily brushing being the gold standard (if you can, and your Maltipoo needs it)
Regular brushing not only keeps your Maltipoo’s coat healthy and tangle-free but also promotes healthy skin, reduces shedding, and strengthens the bond between you and your dog.
Remember to be gentle, patient, and consistent during brushing sessions.
Use the right tools, create a comfortable environment, and reward your Maltipoo for their cooperation.
By following these tips, you’ll ensure that your Maltipoo looks and feels their best while fostering a loving, trusting relationship between the two of you.
So, go ahead and grab that brush! Your Maltipoo will thank you for it!
